Suitable age
5 to 8 years (numbers above 20 from about age 7)
Suggested time
10 minutes a day
After this lesson, your child can:
  • count from 1 to 10 in English, saying each number correctly.
  • read the numbers 11 to 20 and write them as words.
  • tell the teen numbers from the tens, such as 14 and 40.
  • build any number up to 100 from tens and ones, such as thirty-seven.

How Are Numbers Built in English?

Your child doesn’t need to memorize a hundred separate words. The numbers from 1 to 100 are made from only about thirty words, in three groups:

  1. 1 to 12: each number has its own word, and these come first.
  2. 13 to 19: they all end in teen, such as thirteen and fourteen.
  3. The tens: they end in ty, such as twenty and thirty, and the ones are added with a hyphen, as in twenty-one.

Steps for Teaching Numbers at Home

  1. Start with 1 to 5, then add 6 to 10 the following week.
  2. Link each number to real counting: count stairs, spoons and shirt buttons, saying the number in English for each thing you count.
  3. Move on to 11 to 20 once your child can count to 10 without help.
  4. Teach the tens by clapping: count ten, twenty, thirty together with a clap for each, so your child notices that the tens end in ty.
  5. Build numbers together: write a number like 25 and ask your child to say the tens, then the ones: twenty-five.

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

MistakeCorrect
Mixing up fourteen and fortyfourteen = 14 and ends in teen; forty = 40 and ends in ty.
Writing fourtyThe correct spelling is forty, with no u.
Writing twenty one without a hyphenBetter: twenty-one, with a hyphen between the tens and the ones.

An Activity: “How Many Times?”

Say a number from 1 to 10 in English, and your child jumps or claps that many times. Then swap roles: your child says the number and you jump. This links each number’s name to the amount it stands for.

  • A number between two tens = the tens + a hyphen + the ones, as in 62 = sixty-two.
  • Start by counting from 1 to 10, and don’t move on until your child can count without help.
