Kitabcom is an app and website that teaches children English from a printed book. We designed it for children, so we collect as little as possible, sell no data, and show no ads.
What the app uses, and why
- Camera: so the app can see the page of the book or worksheet and bring the characters out of it. Images are processed on the phone itself; they are never stored or sent anywhere. If a teacher uploads a proof picture from their photo gallery, only that picture is sent, as described in the Teacher Program section below.
- Microphone: when your child is asked to say a word or answer Sara, a few seconds of their voice are recorded and sent to our server, which passes them to the Microsoft Azure speech service to turn them into words and assess pronunciation; the result is then returned to the app. The recording is not kept on our server or by Microsoft after processing, and it is never used for any other purpose or to train any model.
- Conversations with Sara (Talk with Sara plan): your child’s words, once turned into text, are sent from our server to Anthropic (Claude) to write Sara’s reply within the page’s topic only, then to ElevenLabs to speak it in Sara’s voice. We send no name or information about your child, we do not keep conversation text, and it is never used to train any model. Parents can turn off free conversation in the Parents’ Corner.
- An anonymous device token: on first use, our server gives the phone a random code that identifies no one, to keep your child’s progress and limit pronunciation checks per day. With it we keep the operating system, the app version, the country and the plan.
- Progress and lesson use: the pages your child has finished and their stars, the lessons started, and the pronunciation score for the requested word. On the phone and on our server, linked only to the anonymous token, to show parents a progress report and improve the lessons.
- Usage limits: our server counts pronunciation checks and conversations per day for each token, and requests per hour from each internet address (stored as an irreversible hash), and deletes these counts within two days.
- A teacher’s code: if a family opens the app through a teacher’s link or types their code, we keep the code with the anonymous device token, to give the family its discount and the teacher their share. The app reads the code from the install link, or from copied text that starts with a Kitabcom code, and reads nothing else.
- Crash reports: if the app stops because of an error, it sends the technical error description, the screen name, the app version and the phone model, with no information about your child.
- Worksheet audio: downloaded from our website the first time a sheet is scanned, then kept on the phone.
Accounts (optional)
- The app works without an account. An account is useful for two things: moving a subscription to a second phone, and the Teacher Program (which requires one).
- You sign in with Google or Apple only. We never ask for or see a password. We keep what Google or Apple gives us: your name, your email address (which may be a hidden Apple relay address) and an account identifier.
- An account holds two phones. For each phone we keep its anonymous token, its model, a technical device identifier (so reinstalling the app doesn’t count the same phone as a new one) and the dates of first and last use.
- Deleting your account: in the app, go to Parents’ Corner → My Account → Delete Account. The account and its phones are deleted from our servers immediately. A teacher’s payments stay in our financial records without the account name, because we are required to keep accounts.
Notifications
- The app asks for notification permission only when parents turn on the daily reminder, or when a teacher sends their application or opens their dashboard.
- The daily reminder is scheduled on the phone itself. For teacher approvals, payments and news, we keep the notification address that Google (Firebase) or Apple gives the phone, with the anonymous device token and the country.
- You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone’s settings.
Subscriptions and payment
- Subscriptions are handled by Google Play or the App Store itself, and we never see card details. The store sends us the order number, the plan, the amount and the subscription status.
What we never collect
- We never ask a child for a full name, email, phone number or photo, and we don’t collect their location (we only know the country from the network).
- The child’s name that Sara uses is entered in the Parents’ Corner and stays on the phone.
- No ads, and no advertising trackers from other companies.
For parents
- The Parents’ Corner in the app is for adults: it holds the account, the subscription, the settings and the links to our website.
- You can delete all of the app’s data from the phone by uninstalling the app, or from the phone’s settings.
- To delete your child’s progress from our server, or for any question, write to privacy@kitabcom.com. Details are on our data deletion page.
The website: “Tell me when the app is out”
- If you leave your email in this form, we keep it with your choice (parent, teacher, school or center), your country and the sign-up date, on the Cloudflare servers the website runs on.
- We use it for a single message on the day the app launches. We never share or sell it.
- The form is for adults; children are never asked to fill it in.
- To have your email deleted at any time, write to privacy@kitabcom.com.
The Teacher Program: applications and proof of teaching
- Applying requires an account (Google or Apple). We keep what the teacher entered: name, WhatsApp number, country and city, school, and email if given.
- The proof picture (a teachers’ union card or an appointment letter) is seen only by the Kitabcom team, to confirm that the applicant is a teacher. It is shown to no one else, used for nothing else, and deleted from our servers as soon as the application is reviewed (approved or declined), and in any case within two months.
- Teachers may cover their ID number and photo before uploading: we only need the name and the issuing body.
- A teacher’s key works on two phones. For each phone we keep only an anonymous token and the phone model, to know it is one of the two.
- To pay a teacher’s share, we keep the payout method they choose (such as a CliQ alias, a wallet number or an IBAN), and a record of payments by families who used their code and of transfers to them. We don’t know these families’ names.
- To have an application’s data deleted at any time, write to privacy@kitabcom.com.
The website: visit statistics
- We use Google Analytics on the website (not in the app) to see how many people visit, which countries they come from, which pages they open and what they do there: downloading the book and worksheets, printing, listening to words and playing.
- We send it no name, email or anything that identifies a person, and we have switched off all of its advertising features.
- Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to count visits. You can block them in your browser’s settings or with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
